Photography Lighting

Shed Light on the Subject

Digital photography lighting does present a few challenges,
including the fact that some CCD sensors are missing the broad latitude exposure
that color film cameras have.

Although digital cameras use the same light as film cameras,
they have a more comprehensive way of interpreting, reading and managing light.

What does this mean?

It means that some digital photographs may have blown out
highlights and empty shadows when taken in strong, well-lit areas. With that said,
this is where digital cameras have an advantage. They give you the ability
to test and experiment with digital photography lighting, as well as learn
from prior mistakes.

Many digital cameras have preset lighting modes, also known as scene modes.
They have been setup by the manufacturer and allow you to work with a lager
range of photography lighting conditions. One example is the popular Olympus SP500 Ultra Zoom,
which has 21 present lighting modes. If a particular lighting scene changes or
creates a problem, you can just change the settings to one of the many available,
enabling you to get the perfect shot.

Lighting Modes

A museum lighting mode is ideal for photographing without a flash,
as well as sound effects. Great for taking pictures like museum shots,
art gallery shots or pictures of your sleeping children.

Then, there is a night and portrait mode for shooting main subjects
and background at night. This mode has a shutter speed that is slightly slower than normal.
In terms of digital photography lighting, many cameras have different
white balancing options. White balancing is defined as the process of determining
the baseline white in the photograph and how it related to other colors.
Many cameras have a setting for white balancing.

Digital cameras should also have different options and modes for daylight,
shade, clouds and tungsten. A histogram is also used in many camera,
which allows you judge the exposure in various digital photography lighting scenes and situations.
