Street Photography

photographer

Defining street photography is a difficult thing as each person that engages in it defines it for him or herself.
At it's most basic, street photography involves taking pictures in public places. Some specialize in just urban settings, while others prefer that people be in the pictures as well.

Regardless the core of this form of photography is that the individual defines his subject matter and freely explores it. Even the purpose behind it differs from person. It can range from the simple joy of taking pictures, to the desire to be creative along a certain theme. Some see it as an ongoing documentary of urban life, while another may act as a travel guide, taking pictures of interesting sights in their hometown.
For those interested in the freedom that street photography gives the creative enthusiast, there are a few tips that can make it an enjoyable avenue of self expression.

Look Casual

First, it is important that you look casual at all times. There are several ways to make this work.
Be sure to use a small camera. Showing up at a park with large tripod, an big expensive camera and all the meters, lenses and trimmings screams professional and can make people shy of the camera.
Instead carry a small camera and look more like a tourist. Dress casually as well and make sure your camera bag is small and again not something that looks professional. Another tactic is to get involved in the scene.

If it's a music or sporting event be right in the thick of things. Since you have to get close to the subject sometimes it doesn't hurt to let people know that pictures are being taken. But don't forget the fun of making candid photos as well. The urban environment is perfect for taking pictures when people least suspect it and their at their most natural.

Also remember that the subject must always be the most important thing when taking pictures. And that means that you should take a lot of pictures. Don't worry about the lighting, or trying to get the best possible picture. There's time to sort out the pictures and choose the best ones when they're downloaded later.

Street Photography

Another thing to keep in mind is your equipment. For street photography, this means minding your gear at home, not while out on the hunt. Know your camera and it's capabilities well so that when the perfect shot comes along there's no fumbling with settings.

It's all about the energy of the moment in this form of photography, not the perfect setup. Imperfections that a professional modeling photographer might not want in a portfolio may actually lend an air of style for the street photographer.

Safety

The last thing really to keep in mind is safety. Street photography means possibly getting close to people to capture the moments unfolding.
It is important to respect people's personal space and wishes if they don't want to be in a picture. Also be careful of the people and circumstances. Taking pictures of a street fight, for example could be risky, as might be taking pictures of children. Use common sense and discretion and this could be a highly creative and satisfying hobby and/or job.
